  • Brown Weekly Message #37

    May 18, 2017

    Dear Brown School Family,

    I have HUGE news!

On May 23rd, the JCPS Board of Education has our lease agreement with the city for J. Graham Brown School students to have exclusive rights to use Martha Elliison Peace Park! JCPS will be funding an 8-foot fence and a walking track, but it is up to our school family to raise funds for the playground equipment, outdoor classroom, and raised planting beds. This should cost approximately $100,000.

We need your help! Please consider sharing this link to our Go Fund Me on your social media accounts: https://www.gofundme.com/brown-school-playground

Also, please consider making a donation in honor of your Brown School student. If every student had a $142 donation in their name, that would be enough to fund our playground! You can donate on our Go Fund Me page or you can write a check to the J. Graham Brown School PTSA with "playground" in the subject line.

I am so excited about this for all our students. This is going to be a game changer!

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Angela, Principal

Alley Directional Change – NEXT WEEK
May 22nd through the 24th, the alley direction will revert back to the regular flow. Cars will enter the alley from Muhammad Ali Blvd and exit onto Chestnut Street. We want to thank you for helping us with our trial this week. It seemed to successfully eliminate traffic from Muhammad Ali Blvd and provide a safer afternoon pick up environment. When we find out the verdict on the permanent alley direction, we will let you know.

Instances of students being found after school unsupervised will be documented and reoccurrences may result in students being placed on probation at the school. Please make sure that your student is being picked up each day be 3:00 PM or is enrolled in CEP. To help with locating a carpool, our PTSA has set up a bulletin board on their page on our school website at http://www.mybrownschool.org/ptsa.

    ANNOUNCEMENTS

Alley Directional Change Trial Next Week
Starting May 15th through May 19th, the Louisville Metro Department of Public Works will be running a trial period for a directional change of our back alley. So, next week, traffic will enter the back alley from Chestnut Street and will exit onto Muhammad Ali Blvd. This will impact you during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up, even if you are picking up from CEP.

Please consider an alternate route to the alley. There may be easier routes to access the Chestnut St. side of the alley; also, there may be an easier way to access your route home from the Muhammad Ali Blvd. side of the alley where you will be exiting.

During carpool, students will be entering and exiting vehicles from the passenger side. It may be necessary to move car seats in your vehicle.

In order to ensure that vehicles do not back up onto lanes of traffic on Chestnut St., it is important that vehicles do not arrive prior to 2:25 PM.

  • Brown Weekly Message #35

    May 2, 2017

    Dear Brown School Family,

The Thursday before Derby is always a big day at Brown!

Our 15th Annual Mousetrap Car Derby starts at 11:45 and will run until about 2:00. Our freshmen physics students have been engineering their mousetrap cars for several weeks and they are ready for them to be put to the test. The students will take part in three rotations of races, and there are 58 cars. This is one project our freshmen students have been sweating all year.

The Mousetrap Car Derby will pause at about 1:40 for our annual Pegasus Parade! Students in grades K-2 have been working diligently on their parade floats, and they will be showcasing them in our parade through our school. Students of all grade levels will line the hallways and cheer.

Typically, you’ll see a lot of Derby hats and fascinators proudly worn by students and staff around our building on “Thurby”. However, this year our Derby celebration coincides with Star Wars Day “May the Fourth Be With You”. So, you can bet that you will also see our Brown School family sporting their favorite Star Wars attire. Whatever you decide to wear is fine – just keep in mind that masks and face paint are not permitted.

    Happy Derby!

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Angela, Principal

    Morning Drop Off
Morning drop off begins each morning at 7:30 AM. Please do not drop off students prior to this time as there is not adult supervision in the building.

  • New Sidewalk Being Installed

We have great news! The YMCA is constructing a sidewalk on the north side of the parking garage between 2nd St. and the alley. So, on May 8th and 9th, please plan NOT to walk to/from the school along that grassy path. Please plan an alternate route to access the building.
    Thank you!

    Brown School Principal

Angela Parsons, Ph.D., Principal

Dear Brown School Family,

As principal of the J. Graham Brown School, I am energized and deeply committed to making a positive difference in the lives of your children. I'm honored and thrilled to lead a dynamic school community where teachers and staff cultivate an atmosphere where students achieve and believe in themselves, and family members are actively engaged! Your input, feedback, and support are critical to my leadership of the teaching and learning environment, and above all to the success of your child in our school.

My excitement comes from working with young people and their families for the past 18 years. I've been a part of the Brown School family for two years as its principal, seven years as assistant principal, and six years as a proud parent. As an instructional leader, my vision involves building a positive school culture where shared leadership and decision making are valued, while honoring the legacy and spirit of Brown's history. Without a doubt, I believe that all students will learn and perform at high levels when given an effective, nurturing learning environment; teachers are provided equitable resources and support systems; and parents are embraced as school community members.

At the Brown, the focus of our Self-Directed Learning environment is two-fold. First, we provide an academically rigorous curriculum where students are expected to perform at a level that may seem to be beyond their limits. However, we do so in a environment in which it's okay to not be perfect the first time you try something. Sometimes, students are afraid to take risks for fear of failure; we teach students that learning happens through perseverance, self-responsibility, constructive criticism, and work ethic. Secondly, we understand that ultimately we want all our students to contribute to the greater good. For that reason, our value system is based on a culture of tolerance, compassion, and mutual respect. Graduates of the Brown School are college-bound young people who will go on to make a positive impact on our global society. Our hope is that all Brown School students forge "reasoned minds and educated hearts" of self-directed life-long learners.

Our academic performance is impressive. All three levels of our school are consistently ranked among the top schools in our district, state, and nation. The Kentucky Department of Education gave all levels of our school a distinguished rating, and labeled us a School of Distinction. We have been recognized by U.S. News and World Report as a gold and silver level school numerous times. Each year we produce a high percentage of Governor's Scholars, and participants in both the Governor's School for the Arts and Governor's School for Entrepreneurs. We have National Merit Semi-Finalists. Our students competed in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, attended the Gatton Academy and the Craft Academy, served as student interns at the Brown Cancer Center, and three of our students earned over $1 million in scholarships each! Brown School students consistently win state and national level writing and visual art contests, and earn distinguished ratings for their musical performances. Athletically, we bring home trophies and titles in several sports and have student athletes each year go on to compete at the collegiate level. However, our greatest strength lies in the Brown School's unique culture and size, which make it possible for students to feel welcomed and valued as members of the school family.

We embrace the challenges of the future while we continue to cherish and celebrate the traditions of the past. Our remarkable staff, involved parents, and committed students come together to make the J. Graham Brown School a wonderful and unique place. I'm looking forward to working with all Brown School family members as we advance through an academically successful school year.

Very truly yours,

Dr. Angela
