Brown School News

  • Brown Weekly Message #31

    March 21, 2017

    Dear Brown School Family,

You may have seen a puzzling story in the media regarding our school community requesting that the official name of our school be recognized as the J. Graham Brown School. This proposal is being presented to the JCPS Board of Education at tonight’s meeting. I was puzzled as well when I recently learned that our district had our officially recorded name as Brown School – not even The Brown School. (My thought was, “we don’t even have our The?”) I even went home and dug out my son’s diploma and prominently on the front it listed “J. Graham Brown High School”.

I brought up this issue at a recent meeting of the J. Graham Brown School Alumni Association meeting; they were shocked as well. Jamie McMillin, retired Brown teacher, had been working at the school from the beginning in 1972. He asked how this had happened. Jamie shared that the official name of the school should be J. Graham Brown School, and that the school’s nickname is The Brown School. Jamie said that both references are used in the original working papers. Even the yearbooks dating back to the 1970’s that line the alumni association’s archives have J. Graham Brown School inscribed down the spine. Upon asking alumni who graduated from different decades and eras, all agreed that J. Graham Brown School is what they thought to be our official name.

Our SBDM, PTSA, FRYSC office, and Principal’s Advisory Board are all in agreement with our alumni association and support the official name change. In essence, nothing around here will change. J. Graham Brown School will continue to be imprinted on our letterhead, it will continue to be displayed on the outside of our building, and it will continue to be etched across our hearts.

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Angela, Principal

    REPEAT ITEMS

    Stock Epi-Pens at Brown School

Jefferson County Public Schools will be keeping stock EpiPens at the Brown School!

     FAQ’s

What is an EpiPen and what is it used for?
An EpiPen is an emergency medication that contains epinephrine. Epinephrine is a medication that reverses the effects of an allergic reaction and can be lifesaving. It is safe and easy to use and can be administered through clothing in a person’s outer thigh.

Why is it being stocked at the school?

First time allergic reactions can happen anywhere and at anytime. This is a lifesaving medication that will be available at the school location during school hours.

Do I still need to send in my own child’s prescribed Epinephrine?

YES! This program is for those who have no prior history of allergic reactions. A child with a diagnosed allergy requires appropriate authorization forms and their own dose of epinephrine. These stock EpiPens will not be available on field trips or some after school activities.

Who will be able to administer the EpiPen?
School staff that has completed the yearly Health Services Medication Administration training.

What happens if my child has a reaction and receives an EpiPen?
This is considered an emergency and 911 will be called and the parent/guardian will be notified. Any student that receives an EpiPen cannot remain in school and needs to be evaluated by a medical provider.

    End of Year Ceremonies

When we receive notification from the JCPS Board of Education as to when our high school commencement ceremony is scheduled, we will be able to notify you that date/time as well as the dates/times of our kindergarten celebration, fifth grade promotion ceremony, and eighth grade promotion ceremony. The JCPS Board of Education will vote on the graduation schedule at their March 21st meeting. The options for Brown that will be voted on are: Option #1: May 25th at noon; Option #2: May 26th at noon.

    After School Student Supervision

Our SBDM approved a new policy last year, the After School Supervision Policy, regarding students who are remaining after school unsupervised, who are not engaged in a supervised after school activity or who are not enrolled in the YMCA Childcare Enrichment Program (CEP). Instances of students being found after school unsupervised will be documented and reoccurrences may result in students being placed on probation at the school. Please make sure that your student is being picked up each day be 3:00 PM or is enrolled in CEP. To help with locating a carpool, our PTSA has set up a bulletin board on their page on our school website at http://www.mybrownschool.org/ptsa.

    Morning Drop Off
Morning drop off begins each morning at 7:30 AM. Please do not drop off students prior to this time as there is not adult supervision in the building. Students cannot be left unsupervised at any time. No student should be waiting outside the cafeteria or library, as these locations do not open until 7:30.

    Dear Brown School Family,

In conjunction with National Literacy Month, The PTSA is having a Read-A-Thon fundraiser for grades K-5.  The Read-A-Thon will kick off Tuesday, March 14 and end on Thursday March 30. All funds raised will go to the purchase of new library furniture.

Parents, be looking for forms sent home with your student that will give instructions on how to set up a personalized page.  The website is easy, fun, and secure.  It will allow your student to track their reading at home, school, and they can see their progress on donations and reading sessions.  They can also buy prizes with a portion of the funds they raise!  Students will be reading at school but it's great if they can read at home as well.

    Any questions, contact brownptsa.fundraising@gmail.com

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Angela, Principal

Elementary and middle school winners were selected through an essay contest. High school winners were chosen by a vote from their peers.

High School Students – Matthew Sato and Molly Abate

Middle School Students – Gael Martinez-Morison and Rose Mattingly

Elementary School Students – Sophie Garrett and Jaxton Tolliver

    Inclement Weather Information
Due to inclement weather, there are times when the school district will adjust the school schedule, or cancel school completely. Because the school district has jurisdiction over the start and ending of the school day, the Brown School must adhere to official starting/ dismissal times.  Please refer to the listed directions in how Brown will respond to changes in school starting / dismissal times.
School is Cancelled:  If the JCPS cancels school for the district, the Brown School will be closed as well.  All school activities and athletic events are cancelled. This includes practices as well as home and away athletic events
Early Dismissal:  If the district chooses to dismiss school at any early time, this will be the official end of the instructional day. Brown follows the dismissal time given for middle/high schools.  High School students will be dismissed at the early dismissal time.  Middle and elementary school students will be dismissed at the early dismissal time with parent permission, or picked up by the parent.  No middle or elementary child will be dismissed from school early without proper transportation home. All parents are urged to pick up their child at the announced early dismissal time.  When school is dismissed early, all after school activities are cancelled.  Decisions on athletic events will be made by 2:00 pm.
Delayed Opening:  If the district chooses to begin the start of the school day at a later time, the official beginning of the instructional day will begin after the delay (ex: If on a two-hour delay, Brown will officially begin at 10:00 a.m. rather than 8:00 a.m.). Parents are advised not to drop off students until at most 30 minutes before the start of the delayed school day. (ex: If on a one hour delay, drop off students beginning at 8:30 a.m.)

    After School Student Supervision

Instances of students being found after school unsupervised will be documented and reoccurrences may result in students being placed on probation at the school. Please make sure that your student is being picked up each day be 3:00 PM or is enrolled in CEP. To help with locating a carpool, our PTSA has set up a bulletin board on their page on our school website at http://www.mybrownschool.org/ptsa.

    January 19, 2017

    Dear Brown School Family,

As Brown School has done every four years, students will have the opportunity to watch part of the presidential inauguration ceremony in class. Teachers will be able to stream it in classrooms and it will also be airing in our school library.

Liz Byron, our upper school Social Studies department chairman shared with our staff yesterday, “No matter your opinion on the election, we need to share these momentous points in history with our students to inspire them to be active citizens. The United States is one of the few places in the world that witnesses a peaceful transfer of power every four years. Please allow your students the opportunity to witness this event. This will hopefully open the door to discussions in your classroom about the traditions of U.S. inaugurations, who is present at the inauguration, and what the inauguration means.”

    Sincerely,

    Dr. Angela, Principal

The doors to the school are locked until 7:00 AM.
